Digital Ambivalence
May 26-July 31, 2017
Trinosophes hosts its second solo exhibition by Detroit artist Chris Riddell. While Riddell is best known for his collage, drawings and paintings, this show presents nearly two hours-worth of videos produced in rapid-fire time for his Instagram account, Riddellagram. Included are moving images of his two-dimensional artwork, as well as self-portraits, documentation of his neighborhood and footage he abstracted from television, film and Youtube, becoming a kind of distorted prism of mainstream pop culture and the underground.
Riddell’s experimental audio comprises an original soundtrack with manipulated tape loops, sound samples repeated backwards at double-speed and the artist’s own poetic outbursts, making listening to the exhibition from another room just as compelling as viewing it on the screen.
